When a pet goes missing, it is easy to lose precious time to panic. A simple sequence helps: search nearby first, give helpers accurate information, contact the organizations most likely to receive a found pet, and keep a written record of what has been checked.

The first 24 hours, step by step

1. Immediately: confirm and search nearby

   Check the home, yard, garage, vehicles, and any place your pet likes to hide. Ask everyone in the household to pause and confirm the last time and location they saw your pet. Search the immediate area quietly, including under decks, porches, bushes, sheds, and nearby hiding spots. Bring a leash, treats, a familiar blanket, and a phone with your pet's photo.

   Create a simple flyer with a large photo, “LOST PET,” the last-seen area, date, identifying details, and one reliable contact method. Share it with neighborhood groups, local shelters, veterinary offices, and businesses near the search area. Ask people to send the time and location of sightings rather than guessing where your pet went. Do not publish your home address, gate codes, personal schedules, or other details that could put your household at risk.

5. Hours 6–12: organize a search grid and follow credible sightings

   Divide nearby streets, trails, parks, and likely routes into small sections. Assign each section to a pair or small group, record where people searched, and note the time. Search again at quieter times with a flashlight, even during daylight, because frightened pets may stay hidden. If someone reports a sighting, ask for a photo or precise location and time.
